Standard order for showing items doesn’t change at frontend

The standard order for showing items for »forums« and »topics« can be switched at the backend. But this has no effort at the frontend. No matter what is selected at the backend, at the frontend is shown »newest to oldest«. What do I need to do in order to change that?
