Changing Default Order for Replies

Currently, reply is shown oldest first. Would it be possible to change the default order so the default is showing newest reply first?
Specifically, we would like to be able to show up to a certain number the newest replies on a topic. For example, show most recent 50 replies to a topic, newest first.
Could you let me know how to do this? Thanks.
